MB Refinery is committed to innovative, efficient,
and sustainable energy solutions for Nigeria's future.
MB Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited was born out of determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to overcoming challenges within Nigeria's oil and gas industry. Our journey is rooted in firsthand experience of the realities of the downstream sector and a strong desire to build sustainable solutions rather than depend on unstable systems.
Driven by innovation and responsible engineering, we focus on developing efficient refining and petrochemical infrastructure that strengthens local supply, enhances energy security, and supports Nigeria's industrial growth. Our operations are guided by safety, transparency, and long-term value creation for stakeholders and host communities.
Our story began with the establishment of a petroleum depot — a bold and strategic move designed to provide seamless service, reliable distribution, and value to our customers. At the time, this initiative represented our entry point into the downstream oil and gas value chain, driven by a clear goal: to serve Nigeria's growing energy needs with efficiency and integrity.
However, the operating environment quickly revealed itself to be far more challenging than anticipated.
Sourcing petroleum products to meet customer demand became a major obstacle. During this period, most of Nigeria's refineries were operating far below capacity or were completely inactive. As a result, product scarcity became widespread, affecting numerous tank farms and operators across the country.
As a growing company, MB Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited faced additional constraints, including:
These challenges placed immense pressure on operations and long-term sustainability.
For over two operationally demanding years, the company worked relentlessly to remain active in a highly competitive, unpredictable, and capital-intensive market. Each day required disciplined decision-making, adaptability, and persistence to overcome supply shortages, financial limitations, and evolving market conditions.
Rather than retreat, these challenges strengthened our resolve and sharpened our understanding of the industry's structural gaps.
Faced with these realities, the company made a pivotal strategic decision to transition its focus from Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) to Heavy Fuel Oil (HPFO). This shift marked a defining moment in our evolution.
By lifting Heavy Fuel Oil from a modular refinery, MB Refinery achieved greater supply stability and operational consistency. This move not only stabilized the business but also provided valuable insight into the potential of modular refining as a practical and sustainable solution for Nigeria's energy challenges.
Our experience working with modular refining solutions sparked a transformative vision — the ambition to develop our own modular refinery and build a more resilient, locally driven supply chain. This vision was born from necessity, experience, and a deep understanding of Nigeria's refining gaps.
Rather than relying solely on imports or inconsistent supply sources, we envisioned contributing directly to local refining capacity, improving reliability, and supporting long-term energy sustainability.
Today, MB Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited stands as a testament to resilience, adaptability, and innovation. Our journey from depot operations to refinery development reflects our commitment to growth, learning, and national contribution.
We are driven by:
Our story is not just about where we started, but about where we are headed — building infrastructure, knowledge, and systems that support Nigeria's energy future.
By prioritizing health, safety, and environmental stewardship, MB Refinery develops resilient energy infrastructure that delivers long-term value while safeguarding people and the environment. Our commitment to HSE strengthens trust, supports regulatory compliance, and ensures responsible energy development for present and future generations.
